April 10th – Spring 2026
What began as a small, independent garden maintenance service in October 2022 has steadily grown into a comprehensive garden care business, shaped by experience, refined systems, and the ongoing transition into Earthly Comforts G.P.M. Ltd.
In this update, you’ll find not only seasonal insights but also a few developments within the business and new resources taking shape behind the scenes. Each service update—published four times a year—aligns with the gardening calendar, keeping you informed as the seasons change.
Alongside these updates, the Earthly Comforts website continues to evolve as a working resource, where clients can explore gardening topics, learn more about our services, and better understand the principles that guide our approach to long-term garden care.
The Garden Butler Team
The Earthly Comforts team has continued to settle into a more consistent rhythm over recent months, with a focus on steady, reliable care across the gardens we look after.
Many clients will already know Rory, who leads the garden work and owns Earthly Comforts, and Suze, who manages the business’s administration. Kevin is now a regular presence in the gardens, working alongside Rory as part of ongoing maintenance.
As the business develops, the focus has remained on building a small, dependable team rather than expanding too quickly. This allows us to maintain a consistent standard of work and a familiar presence for clients, which we feel is an important part of long-term garden care.
The Garden Butler approach continues to guide how we work. It is not a formal role structure, but a way of thinking about the service — centred on responsibility, continuity, and looking after gardens over time, rather than approaching them as one-off jobs.
Suze continues to support the gardens where needed alongside her administrative role, helping ensure the day-to-day running of the business remains organised and responsive.
To complement these developments, we are gradually introducing uniforms during 2026, featuring organic, garden-led tones such as olive, pumpkin, russet, forest green, khaki, and brown — chosen to reflect the natural environments we work within.
A Broader Approach to Garden Care
Regular garden maintenance remains at the core of Earthly Comforts, providing the steady, ongoing care that keeps gardens healthy, balanced, and enjoyable over time.
Alongside this, our work increasingly includes soft landscaping, garden resets, estate-style care, and practical garden support — whether that’s restoring overgrown areas, improving planting, or gradually refining how a space functions.
These elements are not treated as separate services, but as part of the same continuous process. Gardens are not static, and their care rarely fits neatly into categories — maintenance and improvement naturally sit alongside one another.
During 2026, we are also placing greater focus on lawn care and hedge management. This includes continued use of modern mowing equipment, alongside further training in professional hedge cutting to ensure work is carried out carefully, consistently, and to a high standard.
Earthly Comforts remains focused on Sandwich and the surrounding areas, allowing us to work closely, reliably, and with long-term continuity for the gardens entrusted to us.
The Services We Offer
Earthly Comforts provides a range of garden care services designed to support gardens over the long term, with a focus on consistency, flexibility, and thoughtful maintenance.
At the centre of our work is Green Maintenance — regular, ongoing care that includes lawn care, pruning, weeding, hedge cutting, planting, and general garden management. This forms the backbone of how gardens are kept healthy, balanced, and looking their best throughout the seasons.
Alongside this, we carry out seasonal work, garden clearances, planting projects, and soft landscaping — often as part of the same ongoing relationship rather than separate, one-off jobs.
Our work also extends into estate-style care and practical garden support where needed, helping gardens develop steadily over time rather than relying on occasional, reactive interventions.
Working with Trusted Trade Partners
While Earthly Comforts focuses on garden care, there are times when a garden requires specialist work beyond our own scope.
In these cases, we work alongside a small number of trusted trade partners — including specialists in areas such as guttering, landscaping, tool maintenance, window cleaning, and housekeeping.
These are individuals and businesses we know and trust to carry out their work to a good standard, and who approach their work in a way that aligns with our own.
Where appropriate, we can help coordinate or recommend these services, ensuring work is carried out smoothly and gardens continue to develop in a consistent, well-managed way.
Projects Currently in Development
Alongside the day-to-day care of gardens, Earthly Comforts is gradually developing a small number of longer-term ideas that support how the service evolves over time.
One of these is a developing focus on soil — looking more closely at soil health, composting, and how gardens can be supported from the ground up. This is still taking shape, but it forms an important part of how we think about long-term garden care.
We have also recently begun trialling robotic lawn mowers in a small number of gardens. Two are currently used as working tools alongside our regular visits to support routine lawn care, while a third is being tested specifically as part of a potential subscription-based mowing service.
This is an early-stage trial, and the intention is to understand where this approach works well, rather than to apply it broadly. In the right setting, it offers a quieter, more consistent way of maintaining lawns over time.
Alongside this, we now offer a striped lawn finish where appropriate, using dedicated equipment. This is something that suits certain gardens and client preferences, and is applied selectively rather than as a default.
We continue to favour quieter, more efficient equipment wherever possible, helping to reduce disruption for both clients and neighbouring gardens.
We are also currently in the process of introducing a dedicated vehicle into the business.
This will help us move more efficiently between gardens, carry the right tools for each job, and improve our green waste management. Additionally, we are also developing an on-site shredding service, allowing green waste to be processed directly within the garden where appropriate.
Both are practical additions, aimed at supporting the steady growth of the business and improving how we work behind the scenes.
The Earthly Comforts Advocate Programme
The Earthly Comforts loyalty system has recently been refined and is now centred around the Advocate Programme.
Clients who choose to display an Earthly Comforts window poster become part of the programme, receiving loyalty ticks for each garden visit, plus additional ticks each month as a thank-you for supporting the service in this way.
These ticks accumulate over time and can be redeemed either as a discount on future invoices or exchanged for a small number of vouchers from independent local businesses in Sandwich.
The programme is designed as a simple way to recognise ongoing support while also encouraging a stronger connection between the gardens we care for and the wider local community.
Loyalty Prize Draw Update
As part of the updated Advocate Programme, the previous monthly prize draw has now been phased out and replaced with a more seasonal approach.
Instead, Earthly Comforts will now hold four prize draws each year, aligned with the seasons, each offering a £30 prize.
In addition, there will be a Christmas draw at the end of the year, with a £50 prize.
This change allows the programme to feel more in step with the gardening calendar, while keeping the draws simple and meaningful.
Website Resources & Garden Knowledge
The Earthly Comforts website and blog are gradually becoming a valuable resource for clients seeking practical, useful information on garden care.
The blog itself has been active since 2022 and continues to develop as a place for regular gardening notes and observations, drawn directly from the gardens we work in.
New additions will include downloadable care guides, seasonal resources, and more detailed articles exploring areas such as soil health, wildlife-friendly gardening, and the realities of managing working gardens over time.
New articles are published frequently, reflecting ongoing seasonal work, plant care, soil conditions, and the quieter, day-to-day aspects of properly maintaining gardens.
Earthly Comforts Literature & Local Information
In 2025, Earthly Comforts launched its first local literature drop, introducing the service to households in the surrounding area. Printed materials remain an important and practical way of sharing what we do, particularly within the communities where we work.
Alongside this, the Earthly Comforts identity is becoming more visible through small, consistent details — including branded gardening uniforms and the Advocate window posters displayed by clients.
These simple, recognisable touches help people build a clearer picture of the service and the values that sit behind it.
A further literature drop is now underway in April 2026, extending coverage both within Sandwich itself and into nearby areas. The previous distribution focused more on locations outside the town, whereas this next phase brings the service more directly into the community’s centre.
Wildlife and Local Ecology
Earthly Comforts supports wildlife-friendly gardening practices wherever possible, helping gardens provide habitat for birds, pollinators, and other beneficial wildlife.
This forms part of a wider approach to garden care — recognising that gardens are not isolated spaces, but part of a broader local ecosystem.
We are also proud to support the Gazen Salts Nature Reserve, reflecting our ongoing interest in habitat care and the natural environments that sit alongside the gardens we maintain.
Digital Systems & Organisation
As the business continues to develop, we are gradually introducing improved digital systems to help keep scheduling, service records, and invoicing more organised and consistent.
These systems are intended to support the day-to-day running of the business quietly in the background — ensuring accurate records for each garden while reducing administrative pressure, and allowing more time to be spent on the gardens themselves.
Green Waste Collection Update
Earthly Comforts offers an optional Green Waste Collection service for clients who prefer garden waste to be removed and responsibly processed during maintenance visits.
Clients who joined the service prior to 2026 will retain their existing rates until November 2026. After this point, pricing will align with the current structure outlined on the pricing page.
This approach allows for a gradual transition while continuing to reflect the rising costs of responsible waste handling and disposal.
Garden Maintenance Pricing
Our current rate for new garden maintenance clients in 2026 is £27.50 per hour, per gardener.
This reflects the level of care, consistency, and long-term approach that underpin the Earthly Comforts service and allow us to continue providing reliable, well-managed garden maintenance throughout the year.
Service Rate Update
In earlier years, some gardens were maintained at reduced trainee rates while team members gained experience. As the service has matured and the team is now fully trained, Earthly Comforts no longer operates trainee-rate pricing, and all maintenance work is now carried out at the standard rate.
Gardens that joined the service in 2024 and 2025 at varying hourly rates will gradually move toward the current 2026 maintenance rate of £27.50 per gardener, per hour.
Where possible, these adjustments will take place at the next scheduled price review in November 2026, helping bring garden plans into line with the current structure. In some cases, earlier alignment may be necessary where existing arrangements differ more significantly.
Earthly Comforts continues, where possible, to absorb some of the rising costs of running a small, local garden service — including equipment, transport, training, and responsible waste handling — allowing many existing clients to remain on earlier pricing for longer.
This approach relies on invoices being settled promptly. Timely payment helps maintain stability across the service and ensures pricing remains fair and manageable for all gardens.
Where accounts are consistently delayed, it may become necessary to review the garden’s maintenance arrangement sooner. This may involve adjusting hours or, in some cases, rescheduling visits until the account is brought up to date.
For gardens booked on a seasonal or occasional basis, rates may be adjusted earlier to remain aligned with the current service structure. We recognise that every garden is different, and we are always happy to discuss arrangements to ensure the service remains suitable and sustainable.
Invoicing Structure
From May 2026, the following invoicing structure applies:
Regular maintenance visits are invoiced fortnightly, reflecting the work carried out during that period.
Seasonal work, garden clearances, and project work are invoiced at the end of the week in which the work takes place.
All invoices are based on the actual time worked. We do not estimate, bundle, or round up charges.
Where accounts remain outstanding for longer periods, it may become necessary to adjust or delay scheduled visits until they are brought up to date.
Looking Ahead
Over time, Earthly Comforts is gradually developing into a more structured garden management service — supporting gardens not just through individual visits, but through consistent, long-term care and stewardship.
The focus remains on maintaining a steady, reliable presence in the gardens we look after, allowing them to develop naturally over time rather than through short-term or reactive work.
As the service continues to evolve, the intention is to keep things simple, well-managed, and consistent — ensuring that each garden receives the attention it needs, without losing the personal, hands-on approach that sits at the heart of Earthly Comforts.
A Quiet Thank You
Earthly Comforts has always been built around steady work, long-term relationships, and careful attention to the gardens we look after.
The developments outlined here are intended to help keep the service organised, sustainable, and dependable as it continues to grow.
We are grateful to those who trust us with their gardens, and we look forward to continuing that work quietly through the seasons ahead.
