How We Work
Earthly Comforts is built around care that is steady, thoughtful and often quietly invisible.
You may know one of our Estate Butlers by name, but what we provide is a service — shaped by shared standards, consistent methods and a long-term view of stewardship. Whether we’re caring for a garden, supporting a property, overseeing practical responsibilities or helping manage a larger project, our approach remains the same.
We don’t rush to create the appearance of progress or chase dramatic results. Instead, we pay attention to the details, notice small changes, and take responsibility for the things that help homes, gardens, and properties remain healthy, presentable, and well cared for over time.
Some days, the work is visible. Other days it’s preventative, organisational, preparatory or simply observational — but all of it matters.
It’s work that doesn’t shout, but over time, it shows.
Working With the Seasons
Weather patterns are changing, and responsible stewardship means adapting to changing conditions.
As Garden Butlers, we continue to work through challenging weather — including prolonged wet periods, storms and extreme heat — but never at the expense of long-term garden health.
This may mean that we:
Adjust working hours during periods of extreme heat.
Phase, postpone, or adapt project work during saturated ground conditions.
Prioritise soil protection, plant health and long-term resilience over short-term appearance.
Recommend seasonal adjustments to maintenance plans when conditions require it.
Routine maintenance can usually continue as planned. Larger projects, however, often require judgment, timing and sometimes restraint.
Our approach is simple: we work with the conditions, not against them. By respecting the natural rhythms of the seasons, we help gardens remain healthy, resilient and sustainable for years to come.
Insurance & Professional Cover
Earthly Comforts carries public liability insurance, providing reassurance that both people and property are protected while we are carrying out Estate Butler services.
Whether we’re working in a garden, supporting a property project, assisting with a house clearance, carrying out practical maintenance, or helping manage a larger estate-related task, we are committed to operating professionally, responsibly, and safely at all times.
Copies of our insurance documentation are available upon request.
Earthly Comforts Advocates
Some clients choose to support Earthly Comforts by helping us gain local visibility within the communities we serve.
This may involve displaying a small Earthly Comforts window poster — a simple, neighbourly way for others to discover our services. Many of our clients first hear about us through recommendations, local conversations, and seeing our work in the area.
Participation is entirely optional, and there is never any expectation to take part. We simply appreciate the support of those who choose to help us grow through local advocacy and word of mouth.
How it works
Clients who choose to display an Earthly Comforts window poster are recognised as Earthly Comforts Advocates.
This visible support helps local people discover our services and allows our business to grow through recommendation and community trust rather than relying solely on traditional advertising.
As a small thank-you, we quietly record an Advocate credit while a poster is displayed. Once the value reaches £10, clients may choose to:
Receive £10 off a future invoice, or
Exchange it for a £10 reward with a participating local independent business* (see table below).
There are no points to collect, no complicated rules and no obligation to participate. It is simply our way of recognising those who choose to support Earthly Comforts and help strengthen our local presence.
*Participating businesses may change from time to time.

Referrals
Many of our clients come to us through recommendation.
Occasionally, a new client will get in touch after hearing about Earthly Comforts from a neighbour, friend or existing client. When that introduction leads to work that we are happy to take on, we may add a small, one-off Advocate thank-you as a gesture of appreciation.
This is not a formal referral scheme, and there is no expectation to recommend us. It is simply our way of quietly recognising the trust and support of those who help others discover our services.
A small note
Earthly Comforts Advocates are not “members” of a scheme, and this isn’t a loyalty programme in the usual sense.
It’s a simple exchange:
local visibility, met with local appreciation.
Working With Changing Seasons
Weather patterns are becoming less predictable, and responsible garden stewardship requires a flexible approach.
Longer wet periods, sudden heat and sharper seasonal shifts all affect how gardens grow and respond. As Garden Butlers, we adapt our work to suit the conditions rather than forcing gardens into a rigid timetable.
This may involve protecting soil during prolonged rainfall, adjusting working hours during periods of extreme heat, improving drainage, or recommending planting and maintenance practices that support long-term resilience rather than short-term appearance.
Our role is not simply to maintain gardens, but to understand them. By observing how each space changes over time, we can make informed decisions that support its health, character and sustainability.
Familiarity matters. Gardens — like people — respond best to steady, informed care.
Why You Won’t See Many Before & After Photos
Much of our work involves ongoing Garden Butler and Estate Butler care rather than one-off transformations. Gardens, properties and homes under regular stewardship rarely have a clear “finished” stage — they evolve over time.
We also place great importance on client privacy. Gardens are personal spaces, homes are private places, and many of the projects we support involve sensitive family, property, or estate matters. Any photographs we take are primarily for reference, continuity and record-keeping rather than public display.
Where before-and-after images genuinely help illustrate a project — such as a garden clearance, restoration, property preparation, or estate-clearance project — we may share them with permission.
Otherwise, we believe the true measure of our work is consistency, trust and the long-term condition of the gardens, properties and spaces entrusted to our care.
We work for the people who live with them — not for the camera.

Why We Support Gazen Salts Nature Reserve
Before Earthly Comforts existed as a business, its roots were already taking shape.
For over two years, I volunteered at Gazen Salts Nature Reserve, working hands-on with land shaped by water, wildlife and time. That experience changed how I understood stewardship — not simply as caring for a garden, but as looking after something over the long term with patience, observation and respect.
The principles learned at Gazen Salts — soil health, restraint, seasonal awareness and respect for natural processes — became the foundation of how Earthly Comforts works today. They continue to influence every aspect of our work, from Garden Butler services to the wider Estate Butler approach that has evolved from them.
In many ways, it was there that the business found its direction.
Supporting Gazen Salts is our way of staying connected to those beginnings and recognising that good stewardship extends beyond individual gardens and properties into the wider landscape we all share.

Looking Ahead
As Earthly Comforts continues to evolve, we remain committed to thoughtful innovation, environmental responsibility, and practical stewardship. New ideas are adopted carefully, tested properly, and introduced only where they genuinely benefit the gardens, properties, and clients we support.
The Soil Hub
The Soil Hub
We are in the early stages of developing the Soil Hub — a closed-loop approach to soil care built around responsible green waste recycling and resource recovery.
The aim is to retain as much value as possible from the garden waste generated by our work, returning it to the soil in useful, practical forms rather than treating it as waste. Over time, this will help support healthier soils, reduce waste miles, and encourage more resilient planting across the gardens in our care.
The Soil Hub is still under development and is being approached slowly and carefully. When introduced, it will sit alongside our Garden Butler services, supporting long-term soil health through reuse, regeneration and informed soil management.
Robotic Mowing
We also plan to introduce robotic mowing in selected gardens where it offers genuine long-term benefits.
Used thoughtfully, robotic mowers can improve lawn health through frequent light cuts, reduce noise, and lower environmental impact. However, they are not suitable for every garden, and we will only recommend them where they align with the property, the landscape, and the client’s needs.
As with all new approaches, robotic mowing will be introduced gradually, tested thoroughly and integrated only where it supports long-term stewardship rather than convenience alone.
| Estate Butler Services |
Originally established as a Garden Butler service, Earthly Comforts has gradually expanded to meet our clients’ needs.
Alongside garden care, we now provide practical Estate Butler support for homes, properties and estates. This includes property stewardship, vacant property care, utility oversight, property presentation, house clearance support, probate-related assistance and the coordination of trusted specialist trades where required.
Our aim is simple: to provide reliable, practical support that helps people care for the places and responsibilities that matter to them.
